Abstract

The cactus project, inspired by a sustainable garden, arose from the need to promote research initiatives to stimulate interest in environmental stewardship at the La Magdalena Educational Institution. It stemmed from real-world situations, such as adapting a space to beautify and increase green areas within the institution using cacti. This small and eye-catching species addressed the limited space available for green areas, and it also facilitated educational and interdisciplinary activities. The project had an impact on the educational community, encouraging participation in talks and awareness workshops that highlighted the importance of sustainable gardens and how cacti help conserve water. Collaborative workshops were planned on topics such as decorating flowerpots and assisting with the placement of irrigation systems. The research objective was to design a proposal based on technological tools that would strengthen interdisciplinary and research skills for the co-construction of a sustainable environment.

For the development of the research, the Educational Action Research methodology was implemented in several stages: diagnosis, action strategies to offer alternative solutions, and evaluation of the results to reformulate new action strategies. Furthermore, the corresponding systematization of information was carried out, systematic feedback sessions were held with the community, and dissemination materials were generated to ensure the continuity of the project and to offer the opportunity for replication in other contexts. In this case, families can be encouraged to also become interested in creating their own sustainable environmental environment in their homes, as well as in other schools.
