The Smart Cities aim to improve the lives of their citizens and tourists, providing them with operational management to meet the demands of intelligent transport, education, commerce or agriculture. The Smart Cities oriented to tourism are called Smart Destinations, because they incorporate sustainability and technology in each of the phases. However, a smart tourism destination must not only offer state-of-the-art technology, but must also facilitate the visitor's interaction and integration in the environment in order to guarantee that the user's experience during their stay is unique and unbeatable. For this reason, the objective of the research was to characterize tourism-oriented Smart Cities to identify opportunities that strengthen tourism in the city of Cartagena. The investigation was of qualitative type, due to the fact that no numerical data were measured. The results obtained show that Smart Cities use the Internet of things and augmented reality to improve the experience of tourists, who enjoy information about museums, monuments, and other points of interest in the city at the same time they travel through your Smartphone.
