Evaluation of the medical prescription at a Social Welfare Institute (IPS) in the City of Cartagena, Colombia

Abstract
Background: the prescription of a drug is an act of responsibility that commits not only to the doctor, but to the administration, the pharmaceutical industry and the patients. Objective: we assessed the influence of medical prescription on errors associated with outpatient patients in an IPS in the city of Cartagena-Colombia. Methods: a descriptive study was conducted that used secondary data obtained from a multicentric investigation carried out in 2018 in a medical unit of the city of Cartagena-Colombia. The population of this study was composed of 50 medical formulas corresponding to the patients. The percentage of errors in medical prescription is quantified. Results: of the total of the 50 medical formulas evaluated, errors were evident in 46 (92 %), with a total of 126 errors, highlighting that the average error per file was 2.52±1.38. Conclusions: the illegible letter in the medical prescriptions is a traditionally known cause of medication error, favoring the administration of wrong doses, resulting in inefficiency of the treatment, thus committing the quality of the assistance provided to the patients.
