Stages of the organizational life cycle: a systematic literature review
Keywords:
organizational life cycle, organizational development, entrepreneurship, management, survival, maturity, decline.Abstract
When organizational development is studied over time, different authors have defined clearly defined phases or stages. For this reason, this research aims to know in the first instance the concepts about the organizational life cycle (business) as well as the most important characteristics in each period. We reviewed 57 documents, mostly research articles from the period 2000-2019 extracted from SCOPUS, Science Direct and Google Schoolar databases. The results indicate that 3, 4 or up to 5 phases can occur in organizations, mainly coinciding with introduction, growth, maturity and decline. The authors propose three states, one of which involves the period prior to starting the company: entrepreneurship, management and survival. It is concluded that in current times these cycles tend to be shorter and there are two external actors that can facilitate or hinder the transition from one stage to another, such as government and financial entities.
