MANUSCRIPT REQUIREMENTS / Guidelines for Authors

General characteristics

All items must be sent to the following email: Juan.berrocal@curnvirtual.edu.co. You must include four attachments with the letter and the text of the article. The article is written on letter size paper (21.59 cm × 27.94 cm or 8.5 "x 11") with the margins that the APA rules apply. The text is typed single-spaced (from the title, to the references, not including tables and legends), in one column in Word version,  Arial 12 point, with left and right justification. The text of the article must be paginated in the top right corner.

The pages are numbered consecutively starting with the title. The length of the article of scientific and technological research can vary from one to another. The general requirement is not exceeding 25 pages, including tables, charts, graphs and images.

Presentation Letter

As noted earlier, the letter goes in a separate file. You must include the proposed article, the name of the author who will be responsible for communication and possible corrections as well as the name, signature, permanent address, phone number and email of ALL the authors. The letter with all the signatures can be sent in PDF file or can be written in Word® and include scanned signatures. A third alternative would be, if one of the authors cannot sign, sending an email in which indicate your acceptance to submit the article for publication evaluation.

Text of the article:

Original articles, article of scientific and technological research, have the following structure on the text: Title (in Spanish and English); author (s); Summary (in Spanish and English); Key words (in Spanish and English); Introduction; Materials and methods; Results and discussion; conclusions; Bibliographic references. In the case of large items it is convenient to use subdivisions in some sections (especially the Results and Discussion) for greater content clarity.

Attached to the article there should be a resume of the author where their titles, institutional affiliations and publications are indicated.

Graphs, charts and photographs should be attached to the article indicating the place where they will be placed in the text, clearly placing the corresponding source(s).

Bibliographic  references will be placed within the text, not in a footnote, as follows: first author's last name in capital letters, publication year of the cited source followed by a colon and page (s). Example (ARANGO, 2005: 190).

Below are the details of each section

Title: It should be concise but informative. The title in Spanish with an asterisk at the end (call) to indicate the origin of the article in the footnotes;  English title; the full name of the author or authors, one below the other, each with an increasing number of asterisks to indicate footer academic degrees and institutional affiliations; correspondence address of each of the authors, (preferably institutional) permanent and permanent address, telephone number, city, country and email; abbreviated title, which corresponds to the title reduced to 40 characters and spaces between letters title (for use in editing); footer title, indicating the origin of the work, where relevant (e.g. work or institutional research grade); academic degrees with the names of the institutions where they were obtained and institutional affiliation, including office, name and city of the institution to which each belongs today.

Summary and Abstract: The original articles require a summary of no more than 150 words, describing the purposes of study or research. It is followed by the same summary in English (abstract) .

Keywords: Summary after a list of three to five key words to facilitate the documentary analysis of the article and to be published together with the summary should be included. Only those that are accepted by international databases will be required, which can be consulted at the following addresses: Keywords: (Spanish and Portuguese): http://decs.bvs.br/E/homepagee.htm Key Words (English): http://www.nlm.nih.gov/mesh/

They are  placed first in Spanish and then in English (Key words).

Introduction: Includes clear and coherent research problem approach, the definition of the concepts of the study or variables, theoretical and conceptual foundation of work, study hypotheses (in experimental designs) and the purpose and objective of the study, all with due bibliographical support. The purpose of the article indicates the justification of the study summarized. In this section of the article, only the strictly necessary references are included and no data or conclusions are included.

Materials and methods. They should include: the type of study and design; the definition of the universe, the study population, the type of sampling performed and the sample size; the description of  criteria for inclusion and exclusion of the sample; exposing the ethical considerations of the study and subsequent approval by institutional ethics committees (if it is the case); an explanation of the procedures performed in a complete, orderly and clear manner; the description of the technical characteristics of equipment, instruments (especially brands, references and models) and materials (hopefully generic, in the case of drugs); the presentation of the variables and their operationalization; clear illustration of the methods and instruments used for the collection and organization of information; the detailed description of the methods used and decisions made for information analysis. References of accredited methods, among them statistical, will be offered.

In the case of article revision,  it has to include a section in which the methods used to locate, select, collect and synthesize data will be described. These methods are also described in the summary of the article.

Results and discussion. The results are presented in the text, tables and graphics in a logical sequence. Do not repeat  data tables or illustrations in the text; emphasize or summarize only important observations. In the discussion, emphasize those new and important aspects of the study and the conclusions derived from them. Do not repeat, in detail, data or other information already included in the introductory and result paragraphs. Explain in the discussion section the meaning of the results, limitations of the study and its implications for future research. Observations with those of other relevant studies will be  compared.

Conclusions. Relate the conclusions with the study objectives. Avoid poorly substantiated statements and conclusions insufficiently supported by the data. Recommendations are oriented towards practices in the corresponding field of research presented and they open up the possibility of new studies with new field problems, hypotheses, variables or performance conditions.

Bibliographic references. They will be located in the text, not in a footnote, as follows: first author's last name in capital letters, publication year of the cited source followed by a colon and page (s). Example (ARANGO, 2005: 190).

All cited sources in addition to other secondary sources, should be indicated in the bibliography as well as: Surname uppercase, lowercase name of the author; year of publication; title in italics if it is a book or quotation marks if it is a journal or the chapter of a book, in which case it must cite the source where it comes from in  italics; place of publication; publishing the book or issue of the journal.

Acknowledgements

Include the list of all those who have worked but do not meet the criteria for authorship, such as technical help, help in writing the manuscript or general support by the head of the department. In the appreciation the financial support and material means received should also be included.

People who have collaborated in the preparation of the original, but whose contributions do not justify its accreditation as authors may be cited under the name of "clinical investigators" or "participating investigators," and their function or type of contribution should be specified, e.g. " scientific adviser, "" critical review of study proposal, "" data collection "or" participation in clinical trial. "

Because readers may infer that the persons mentioned in the acknowledgments in any way endorse the data and conclusions of the study, authorization shall be obtained in writing of the persons mentioned in that section.

Enclosures

Two types of attachments are accepted: tables and figures. Tables are matrices showing numerical descriptive results. Figures may be other types of representations of numerical data, diagrams or original images of the study. Attachments will not be included in the text of the article, but presented in a separate file in Word®, one per page. Citations to the enclosures are used in the text calls in ascending order of mention. The numbering for tables and figures is independent. In any case, the maximum number of enclosures that can be included in an article is 10. Each enclosure must be headed  by the type and number of enclosure, followed by the title (e.g. Table 1. Demographic characteristics of the sample). Under the heading insert the corresponding table or figure  and at the bottom of each enclosure you may include  notes to help the reader better understand (abbreviations, codes, images, etc.). It is advisable to avoid enclosures  with numerical results that include very little information and that can be narrated in the text. Images must have a resolution of 300 dpi and be submitted in JPG or TIFF format. For ethical considerations  do not  include pictures of patients, but when this is essential, images must be accompanied by the necessary permits and concealments. Similarly, when an article includes reproductions of published material, these should include the appropriate permission.

Tables

Number the ables consecutively in the order of their first citation in the text and give a brief title for each. Make sure that each table above is in the text.

Figures

Figures should be numbered consecutively according to its first mention in the text. If the figure was already previously published, cite the original and submit written permission from the owner of the copyright for the reproduction of the source material. Such authorization is necessary, regardless of who the author or publisher is; the only exception is  documents of public domain.

Abbreviations and symbols

Use only standard abbreviations. Avoid abbreviations in the title and abstract. When the text is used for the first time an abbreviation stands should precede the full term, except if it is a standard unit of measurement.
