Oral lesions in elderly patients with hypertension in a geriatric institution

Abstract

Objective. To determine the prevalence of most of oral lesions in elderly patients with arterial hypertension of an institution of Barranquilla. Methods. Descriptive observational study, with a sample of 62 elderly hypertensive patients, selected through a non probabilistic convenience sampling. The dental examination consisted of identifying semiológic stomatological lesions, contained in an instrument of medical history. Data were analyzed in frequencies, percentages, DE, average proportion and X2 to give statistical significance relations STATGRAFICS® using the program. Results. It was found that 54.83% were female, also were evident in the range of 81-90 years in a 30.64%. The 85.25% resided in the city of Barranquilla and do not work in a 72.58%. The point prevalence was 0.015% with an average of 3 lesions per patient. The injury was the most commonly pseudoplaca in language in a 54.83%, 45.16% and pseudomembranous candidiasis angular cheilitis in a 40.32%. According to the association of sociodemographic characteristics with lesions showed that the male presented pseudoplaca in tongue (95%; p <0.05), the angular cheilitis is presented in partnership with patients resident in the city of Barranquilla in a 96.42% (95%; p <0.05) lesions such as petechiae and xerostomy were not found statistically significant values. Conclusions. No hypertensive patient was found healthy buccally, being the most frequent female affected by this systemic disease and with older male stomatology injury was not evident in lesions pathognomonic own high prevalence of hypertension.
