Background. Current dentistry experiences a remarkable evolution thanks to the development of alternative that seek to preserve pulp vitality. One option is tissue engineering, which involves the incorporation of stem cells into a biomaterial to reconstruct a tissue with a structure and function similar to the original. Objective. The aim is describing the strategies of tissue engineering focused on the regeneration of dental pulp. Method. A bibliographic review was performed in the Medline, EBSCO-Host and Scopus databases using the terms: dental tissue engineering and/or strategy and dental pulp regeneration between 2008 and 2019. Of the 6,752 articles found, 85 were selected and allowed the description of three tissue engineering strategies used in pulp regeneration: the migration of stem cells, the use of a cell matrix and the use of a biomimetic matrix. Results. The importance of stem cells of dental origin, matrices and possible combinations between them was highlighted. Conclusions. All the strategies described make use of stem cells mainly of dental origin, highlighting that the combination of these with bioactive materials, makes it possible to form an equivalent dental pulp in vitro and in vivo until now in an experimental stage.
