Abstract

Background: Mercury (Hg) is a highly toxic element, considered a global, bioaccumulative pollutant, mainly through the aquatic food chain and mining activities, which results in a serious danger to the health of women of productive and pregnant age. Objective. To describe the perception of health damage from exposure to mercury in women from the municipality of Quinchía, Risaralda in 2018. Methods: Descriptive, cross-sectional design of 67 women miners or relatives of miners to whom a questionnaire on perception of damage to health was applied. Results: 25 % of the women had the occupation of mining or having a mining husband. 64.7 % of women recognized mercury as a potentially dangerous metal. Conclusions: It was possible to establish a high perception of the damage to health, but also at the same time a high presence of symptoms referred and confirmed clinically related to contact with mercury.
